pvP
pvP (Player versus player combat) is the catalyst for change in Ashes of Creation.[4] Player combat is intended to be meaningful, ranging from Caravan battles to vast open world conflicts fought for the pride of Kings and Queens.[5]
- Because players are motivated by different things, because they want something from the game that other players don't want, that's going to cause people to butt heads. Different players are going to want different experiences and the conflict between the two of them will create a bigger and better thing. Out of strife comes rebirth and that's a core symbol, it's a core theme that occurs throughout the game.[6] – Jeffrey Bard
- The majority of players will experience pvP through opt-in objective-based battlegrounds. These are high risk and high reward encounters that do not utilize the corruption system.[7][8][9][10]
- Sieges.[8][11][10][12][10]
- لفاوقلا.[8][10][11]
- بورحلا ةباقن.[8][13][11]
- Naval PvP in the open sea.[8][14][15]
- Better things in more abundance can be found in the open-sea zone. And as a result, that is why there's an added level of risk associated with opting into those locations.[7] – Steven Sharif
- Death penalties (mostly) do not apply to objective-based events (also called sanctioned events).[16][17][18][19]
- Gear degradation applies on death during Caravan PvP.[17][18]
- There are also reasons to engage in open world PvP, which is subject to the player flagging and corruption system.[8][11]
- The risk of gaining corruption is expected to deter the vast majority of players from griefing other players but this doesn't mean that PvP won't occur in the open-world.[20][11]
- Just because our flagging system gives corruption to PKers, doesn't mean PvP won't happen. There is plenty of reason for PvP to occur open-world.[11] – Steven Sharif
- Q: Have you considered a high-stakes loot drop PvP zone/area in Verra?
- A: We have not; and the reason for that is our current PvP systems already allow for material risk essentially that's either through the flagging system or through other event-based pvp opt-in systems as well.[21] – Steven Sharif
- هلثمالا such as Tank and Bard are viable in pvP due to the rock-paper-scissors design philosophy, where each class is naturally strong against certain skill compositions.[22]
Objective-based PvP events such as node sieges, castle sieges, guild wars, and node wars will occur within a prime-time window somewhere between 3PM and 9PM server time. This is subject to testing.[23][24][25]
- Guild wars and node wars can be declared at any time, but the objectives will only spawn during the prime-time window.[26]
Combat revamp
A revamped combat system will be rolled out during and post Alpha-1 testing based on player feedback.[28][29][30][31]
- I just want to give kudos to the combat team, because in my opinion having played this and watched this and seen the community's response to it, they've done a great job in moving away from what was our direction prior to Alpha-1 to now having developed for Alpha-2 a significantly revamped combat experience; and I think it feels good and it plays well and it's fun.[28] – Steven Sharif
- The goal is to give more agency to the player and achieve a more fluid flow of combat with greater mobility when using abilities.[32][33]
- The current hybrid tab and action combat system will remain after the revamp.[32]
- This revamp will not represent the final form of combat, but will set the general direction that combat will be taking.[34]
- The revamp will be iterative and will be rolled out to testers in different phases.[33]
- The developers will be testing whether or not to use global cooldowns GCDs on different types of abilities during Alpha-2.[35]
- As of July 2023 global cooldowns are not currently in the game.[36]
- Instant cast abilities are referred to as off-global-cooldown or OGCD abilities.[36]
The revamped combat system will feature split-body animations, where the character's upper body can be locked by weapon attack animations while the lower body is free to continue moving.[27][37][38]
- You'll be able to move forward while swinging your weapon; and this will allow you complete control over your weapon attacks for melee.[27] – Steven Sharif
Alpha-1 combat was focused on core functionality rather than combat balance.[38] Alpha-2 combat will include archetypes, significant ability support, augments, split-body combat, weapon attacks, and many additional items, among other things.[39]
- Changes that allow templated abilities to apply to 3D positions in the air or water will be prototyped and may be included in Alpha-2.[40]
Factions
There are no predefined factions in Ashes of Creation.[41][42]
- It's important to note that Ashes of Creation is a non-faction-based game. What that means is you're not told who your enemy and your friend is. You are not restricted with the players that you can participate in content with. Instead that choice is left to you, the players, and that is an element of the sandbox environment that we're trying to create with Ashes of Creation.[41] – Steven Sharif
- Because we are non-faction-based, you want to grant the user the ability to either do things that are "evil" or "good", so there has to be a plethora of choice on the evil side for them to participate in.[43] – Steven Sharif
- There are pseudo-factions (temporary factions) in Ashes of Creation.[44]
- Node wars flag the citizens of the warring nodes and their allies as enemies for the duration of the node war.[44]
- بورحلا ةباقن flag the members of the warring guilds and their allies as enemies for the duration of the guild war.[44]
- ةيعامتجالا تامظنملا offer quest lines to assault other organizations.[44]
- We present the player with these soft friction events and then that determines who your friends and your foes are.[44] – Steven Sharif
Threat assessment
Players will have a buff on their nameplate that indicates the gear set they are wearing. Other players will be able to see this buff by targeting that player at a distance.[46][47][48]
- This will indicate the type of armor (cloth, leather, plate) that they are predominantly wearing.[49][47]
- You can target a player. You're going to see what type of armor they have based on a buff they have available to them because obviously cosmetics can change appearance. You might have different silhouettes as a result of that.[49] – Steven Sharif
- The border will indicate the level and quality of the tier set.[46][47][50]
- The developers believe that inspecting gear to obtain an exact equipment list or gear score may lead to "unwelcome behavior".[52]
- When you see a player approaching you and they're wearing a transmog you don't know if that person is a high damage mitigation against physical damage or against magical damage and essentially the way we overcome that is through you being able to target a player at a distance and they will have a buff that's present on them that you will see, which indicates that essentially the piece set that they are wearing. It is important for players to be able to ascertain from a threat assessment standpoint what they're going up against if they're actively checking that, and that will be available.[48] – Steven Sharif
Player health
Health is a stat in Ashes of Creation.[54][55]
- If you are targeting another player specifically, another player not an NPC. If you're targeting another player and that player is not a member of your guild, alliance, raid, or party- those are the four affiliation factors. If they're not a part of those four groups you will not have specific information of their HP level. You will have quarters of information to their [HP] level and you may progress to get that a bit more granular, perhaps to sixths or eighths. You're not going to have exact information about what amount of hit points they have available to them. That level of obfuscation protects a bit of that engagement, that TTK interaction. So you might overshoot a target if you don't know exactly if they're down to their last 20% or 25%. That I think is a very healthy thing to have in PvP, but it is not a normal game design mechanic.[56] – Steven Sharif
- Players that are not in the same party, raid, alliance, or guild will not be able to see other player's exact health bar values or percentages.[56][53][57][54][55] This information will instead be displayed in quarters. A player may be able to progress to see sixths or eighths.[56]
- Previously it was stated that a player's name plate would deteriorate to give an indication of how much damage they have taken.[54][55][58]
Character nameplate
Nameplates are displayed above the head.[62]
- Player character nameplates will have first, and optionally last name (surname).[62]
- The name of the character's guild is displayed next to their name.[63]
- The character's nameplate will deteriorate to give an indication of how much damage they have taken.[54][55][58]
- An icon will identify the character's class.[46]
- Hovering over a player nameplate will show information such as level, class name, and archetype combo.[46]
- A buff icon will indicate the character's gear and grade.[46][47][48]
- The size and priority of nameplates will be relate to their distance (away from the camera).[64]
- The visibility of nameplates can be obscured by in-game objects, such as trees; by utility skills, such as Camouflage or Stealth; or through the use of disguises.[65][66]
- UI settings will enable nameplates to be hidden, resized, and customized.[67][68]
- You can set nameplates to always appear. You can set it to only appear on targets. You can set it to only appear on targets that have taken damage. You can set it to only appear on targets that are aggroing you or your party members. You can set it for your allies, for yourself, for whatever: There's a lot of highly customizable options that are currently in the game.[67] – Steven Sharif
- Summoner summons' creature type appears in the nameplate above the summon. This cannot be changed by the player.[69]
- Mob nameplates will have indicators that identify resistances, buffs, end elite status.[70]
- A star format may be utilized to indicate hit point allocation.[70]
Nameplates in the party UI indicate the player's choice of secondary archetype.[60]
- A padlock icon indicates that the secondary archetype is not yet unlocked.[60]
Open world battlegrounds
لفاوقلا
لفاوقلا are vehicles that facilitate the transfer of cargo across Verra.[74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][3]
- Caravans are the induction of emergent gameplay, which means you cannot predict the situation you're going to be in when you use a caravan. That's part of the risk: The risk is the unknown. If you could predict it then your ability to mitigate that risk would unfortunately remove that dynamic- that ratio of risk versus reward.[82] – Steven Sharif
- Personal caravans are used to transport cargo for one or more players.[78][79][80]
- Mayoral caravans are used by Mayors to transfer cargo between nodes with established trade agreements or alliances.[76][77]
- Caravans are initiated from and arrive at caravansary node buildings within Village ( ﺡﺮﺴﻤﻟﺍ 3) nodes and above.[83][78][84][85]
- لفاوقلا create an objective-based PvP event in the open-world that players can choose to attack, defend, or opt-out of.[86][87][88][89]
- PvE caravan events can cause roadways to be blocked off or hostile mobs to spawn to attack the caravan.[90][91]
- It is possible to launch decoy caravans and merchant ships, but there are visual hints of what is contained in a caravan.[92][93][94] Decoy crates may be available via social organization progression.[92]
Caravan PvP
Friendly defender | |
Friendly attacker | |
Enemy defender | |
Enemy attacker |
لفاوقلا create an objective-based PvP event in the open-world that players can choose to attack, defend, or ignore via a UI window.[96][86][87][88]
- Only the caravan owner and those in the caravan's raid group will be able to see it on the world map.[97][98]
- You will only be able to see the caravan if you are a member of the caravan's raid or if you are the owner of the caravan on the map. If you are not one of those, then you will not see it on the map. If you come within proximity of the caravan you'll be prompted through an event UI to participate if you wish as a defender or an attacker.[97] – Steven Sharif
- Players that choose to attack or defend the caravan will be flagged as combatants.[89]
- The UI notification will include the caravan owner's name and guild.[99]
- The proximity that the UI window appears is determined by the player's performance as either a defender or an attacker in previous raids.[86]
- Once registered as a defender, a player can't switch to attack the caravan.[100]
- The proximity radius for notification of nearby caravan events can be increased or decreased based on the caravan's components or a player's progression in the highwayman system.[101]
- At a certain proximity to the caravan, any player will receive the event notification to participate either as an attacker or as a defender. That proximity radius can be augmented either through players advancement within the Highwaymen system, which is for defenders or attackers you can increase the radius, but also the components can increase and or decrease the radius of that event notification as well.[101] – Steven Sharif
- There will be visual hints relating to the cargo being transported on caravans, but players will not be able to see the exact contents of the caravan.[92][93][94] Cargo is represented in this way even if a cosmetic caravan skin has been applied to the caravan.[93][94]
- Players can be registered participants in a caravan event involving multiple caravans.[102][100] It is not possible for a player to participate in more than one caravan event at a time.[103]
- As a player you can participate in events that have as many caravans collocated as you want. So if you have 20 Caravans that you're trying to move all in a single caravan raid with all of your players you can join all 20 of those caravans into the same caravan defense group; and that is that is the intent of the system. The same is true for the attackers. The attackers can join against all of those caravans.[102] – Steven Sharif
- Caravan components can be individually destroyed by directional attacks against the caravan. All components are destroyed if the caravan is destroyed.[104]
- Some defensive abilities may be effective against blocking projectiles from hitting caravans.[105]
- Basic attacks will not slow caravans, but certain slowing abilities may be able to do so.[74]
- As it stands currently it would be difficult for players to be able to block the caravan. Now that's not to say that certain types of effects cannot be applied to the caravan through ability use, such as slowing effects, or pause effects, stun effects, against the caravan itself, not the rider. But right now we do have a collision priority system which means that vehicles move players and mounts. Mounts and players cannot stop vehicles from moving the vehicle. Its collision has priority; and then ships have the ultimate priority. Nothing can move ships or block ships.[74] – Steven Sharif
- If a caravan's driver is killed or otherwise removed from the caravan then any player will be able to drive the caravan for a period of 15 to 20 minutes before the caravan despawns and becomes a wreckage.[107] A caravan will persist in the world for a period of 5 to 10 minutes from the time its owner logs out or is disconnected from the server.[108]
- There is no limit to the number of times caravans can be commandeered or the number of times caravans get destroyed and replaced.[109]
- Q: Will there be a limit on the number of times a caravan can change hands if successfully taken over during a journey from one node to another?
- A: No. There is no limit a caravan can be destroyed. That caravan can be destroyed. The Caravan thereafter could be destroyed. The driver of the Caravan can be killed and commandeered; and done as many times as is permitted through the situation. That is player driven.[109] – Steven Sharif
Caravan destruction
If a caravan is destroyed or it despawns it becomes a wreckage that contains a portion of the cargo it was transporting.[112][111][113][104][81][114][115] The remainder of the caravan's goods are sunk (lost) when the caravan is destroyed.[113][116]
- When a caravan gets destroyed it creates a wreckage. That wreckage will have a number of the supplies that the caravan was carrying; and when stolen by attackers those supplies become essentially stolen glint, or corrupted glint, and stolen resources that the caravan was hauling. If they are commodities they can maintain their commodity type, and players will have to summon a caravan from a nearby node that would be empty in order to haul those crates back. You can also break into the crates or the cargo itself instead of hauling the cargo as a completed shipment. Doing so reduces the number of total resources that you can gather from the crate. So a portion of it is sunk to the system; and then a portion of it gets sunk further if you choose to break open the crates versus attempting to haul them back.[113] – Steven Sharif
- Commodities crates are marked with a green symbol. Materials crates are marked with a black symbol.[111]
- Anyone may loot a caravan's wreckage.[116]
- Unsealing crates (by breaking open sealed crates) yields less value than transporting the sealed crates for unloading.[117] This is in addition to the value already lost when the caravan was destroyed.[118][113][119][120]
- Caravan components are destroyed if the caravan is destroyed.[121][104] Previously it was stated that components may drop when a caravan is destroyed.[122]
- Q: What is the reason for requiring the destruction of a caravan by the attackers as opposed to the attackers gaining possession of the caravan?
- A: With caravans we really want to emphasize this idea of not necessarily stealing the vehicle, but being forced to achieve victory through destruction; and when you do, you then have the logistical issue of how you're going to transport those goods on your own rather than servicing the transport of that by just hijacking.[123] – Steven Sharif
- In an earlier design iteration, prior to the introduction of cargo crates, it was proposed that destroyed caravans dropped certificates for heavy goods that were redeemable at the origin node for a portion of the goods.[124][115]
- There is no limit to the number of times caravans can be commandeered or the number of times caravans get destroyed and replaced.[109]
Sieges
راصحلا هعلق
تاباقنلا participate in راصحلا هعلق in an effort to capture and occupy one of the five guild castles in Ashes of Creation.[125]
- The minimum goal is for 250x250 players to be on a single battlefield. It is hoped that this can be increased to 500x500 over time.[127][128][129][130]
- There will be systems that mimic some of the mechanics of sieges, but there won't be practice sieges.[131]
- There may be instanced locations within otherwise open-world castle and node sieges, where specific groups can participate in small, short duration objective-based battles that will affect the overall outcome of the siege.[132]
- I love castle-based gameplay. I love trophies. I like rewarding risk a lot; and for me it's very difficult to imagine a MMO that I would want to play where there is not competition of strategic prowess that determines the outcome of these types of events and there is not a meaningful reward both mechanically and from just a bragging rights perspective that players can aim for and try to achieve. I think that it brings a lot to the game when it comes to motivations, to excel, to level, to gain power, to engage those different progression loops when there is an ultimate goal or trophy that is not static and doesn't exist forever once you achieve it, but that you must constantly perform in order to maintain; and that's really the purpose of these castles.[136] – Steven Sharif
A guild that captures a castle will own that castle for a month before it is sieged again.[137][138]
- Each week leading up to the siege week... is a week that's dedicated to one of the three castle dedicated nodes. So around the castle there are three nodes. They represent week, one, two, and three; and then the fourth week is the siege against the castle. Those can only be elevated up to stage three. We've discussed this in the past and there's definitely information out there on the community ran wiki.[137] – Steven Sharif
- In the first three weeks that a guild occupies a castle they will need to level up each of their castle nodes to Village stage through questing.[137][138]
- The fourth week is declaration week, where other guilds have the opportunity to lay down their declaration flag or to sign up as a defender of the castle.[137][138]
- Depending on how well the guild defends their castle nodes results in better defenses for the castle.[138][139]
- Different siege weaponry will grant the attackers the ability to destroy walls, doors and sections of the castle in order to gain access to the inner keep area.[140]
- When castles change hands (following a siege), some taxes stay with the castle and some stay with the guild.[141]
- There will be benefits to attracting people... even if they're not in your guild or alliance – a feudal like system, where you can attract other players who are just independent of this whole politic. They will have things to do there - benefits to receive - and there will be a reciprocal relationship between who you can attract, what they do for you; and how that benefits you and them.[138] – Steven Sharif
ةدقعلا راصحلا
ةدقعلا راصحلا enable players to destroy nodes starting at Village ( ﺡﺮﺴﻤﻟﺍ 3).[143] This paves the way for new development and access to the locked content in surrounding nodes. Due to this dynamic, political strife and intrigue play an important role in the structure of the world.[144]
- Sieging nodes will not be an easy task for the attackers. Cities and metropolises will have a considerable defensive advantage.[144]
- There will be systems that mimic some of the mechanics of sieges, but there won't be practice sieges.[131]
- Death penalties do not apply to objective-based events such as node sieges.[19]
- If you own a home in a node and you don't want to see that home destroyed, you need to defend that city![6] – Steven Sharif
- The majority (~80%) of content in Ashes of Creation is open-world but there may be instanced battles within castle and node sieges where specific groups can participate in small, short-duration objective-based battles for specific waypoints.[132]
بورحلا ةباقن
There will be default guild war objectives as well as objectives that dynamically spawn in the world based on the assets guilds own, the activities guilds have participated in, and other conditions.[145][146][147][148]
- If the guild owns a guild hall, objectives might be related to capturing a quest item in or around the guild hall that is only visible to the warring guild. Capturing this objective may require channeling time.[145][148][147]
- If you have a guild hall and a certain type of guild war is declared that is maybe a higher stakes war, some of those objectives will be centralized either at your guild hall, at the opponent's guild hall; could be a progression step towards the guild hall. It might be a specific a period of time that accumulates into into a central battle at the guild hall for an objective.[147] – Steven Sharif
- If the guild has recently completed a raid, objectives might include stealing one of the quest items that the guild received from killing that raid boss.[145][147]
- Objectives may be based on whether a guild is a patron guild of a node.[145]
- Objectives may spawn based on the home node of the guild leader and/or officers.[145]
- Guild wars can be declared at any time, but the objectives will only spawn during server prime-time.[26]
- There may be bounty objectives to kill a particular guild member. The target may have increased damage mitigation and/or health against the warring guild and can call for help.[148]
- Guild war objectives are intended to be more fluid than castle siege objectives.[148]
Guild war mechanics
بورحلا ةباقن are objective-based PvP events between guilds.[145][147]
- بورحلا ةباقن can be declared at any time, but the objectives will only spawn during server prime-time.[26][149]
- Players can kill each other at any time during the war (not only during server prime-time).[26]
- Guild war objectives are intended to dynamically spawn based on various conditions that exist within each guild.[145][146][148][149]
- Guild wars are not permanent. Definitive victory/surrender conditions exist that are based on the level of the warring guilds and the assets that those guilds have.[146][150]
- Guild wars operate outside the PvP flagging system.[16][17][18][19][150]
- Death penalties (mostly) do not apply to objective-based events, such as guild wars.[16][17][18][19]
- Q: How do you plan on keeping wars fresh long term? Typically in other games wars become one dimensional in terms of strategy. Will intrepid be looking at map changes every few years, or will you give guilds / node mayors the ability to customize the layout or objectives of the battlefield?
- A: Our guild wars have objective-based gameplay that spawn in the world based on several different factors and predicates that might exist. Some of those predicates might be where is your guild a patron guild of? Does your guild have a guild hall? What node is your guild leader and/or officers a citizen of? What was your last completed raid boss? All of those can serve as predicates to then spawn a certain objective within the world that players have to either engage with in a number of different manners. Either they can be kill objectives, they can be control objectives, they can be capture and move objectives. They could be a caravan caravan summons that need to take supplies from those objectives. The idea is to incorporate all of these other ancillary systems that exist within the game in some way shape or form- tie it into the guild war, because we've created those systems for a reason. We want players to engage with those systems, so why not hook those systems into the guild war format? And I think that that creates a very dynamic setting where it is not just about killing and logging out, but rather strategy in both your resource placement, how you respond, and when you respond, the composition of your raid/group teams. Those types of things play a role now in the outcome of those guild wars and I think they keep it fresh because it'll be different per war.[145] – Steven Sharif
Hunting grounds
Hunting grounds are open-world pvP corruption-enabled areas that encompass most of the map.[153]
- Hunting grounds refer to killing monsters or NPCs in the open-world.[153][154]
- This also refers to contesting resources.[155]
One of the interesting components of Ashes of Creation and our flagging system is that it presents the potential for two conflicting parties to have open conflict in the open world over pretty much anything that they may want or disagree with; and if that pertains to a hunting ground, not just the caravan or the castles or the nodes or whatever, it can exist in that area.[156] – Steven Sharif
Outside of PvP for certain things like caravans, sieges of nodes and/or castles is that you're going to have those open-world hunting ground fights that may occur. You're going to have resources fights that may occur. You're going to have political fights that may occur between members of guilds; and we're taking the guild politics to a whole new direction in regards to playing those conflicts out.[155] – Steven Sharif
Our PvP mechanics follow a flagging system, as well as static PvP zones at certain points of interest; fight for control over cities, castles, caravans, or hunting grounds. Our PvP is designed to offer the players a well-balanced and fair world to shape through the pen, or sword should they choose.[157]
نفسلا moving into an open sea naval PvP zone (open waters/deep ocean areas) will automatically flag players as Combatants (purple).[8][14][15] Corrupted (red) players will remain red while in the open sea.[158][159][160]
- Another important change that has occurred is the open seas is now an automatic flagged location. So when you move off of land we have a flagging system that protects and the open seas are international waters where you need to be careful; and there is a lot of opportunity at Sea; and because there's a lot of opportunity that's unique to that content- that's unique to that sea: that's treasure finding; that's NPCs; that's a lot of different stuff there needs to be risk associated with opportunity.[14] – Steven Sharif
- Players entering an open seas area will be notified by the UI ahead of time.[161]
- Death penalties for corrupt players apply to every zone in the game, including naval PvP zones.[158]
- Non-corrupt players will suffer reduced death penalties in naval PvP zones.[158]
- If you are not corrupt and you enter the open seas you will be taking a mitigated form of the death penalties, which means you will have a debuff applied upon death and in addition you will still suffer the gear degradation or gear decay upon death as well. But you will essentially be either significantly reduced in the experience debt accrued through death in the open seas if you're not corrupt, or there won't be experience debt accrued in the open sees if you are not corrupt.[158] – Steven Sharif
- Open sea zones have better resources in more abundance to compensate for the added level of risk.[7]
- We have a very intuitive UI that as you approach the border between open sea and coastal area you are notified of that. You are warned ahead of time. There's a countdown when approaching. We interpolate the distance travel and speed you're moving and you get to see "I'm entering open waters"; and when you do you have this big trophy call out on screen that says "You have entered the open sea. Territory fraught."[161] – Steven Sharif
Operators of a ship's weapons platform can initiate naval PvP against another ship in the following cases.[15]
- The result of events (such as guild wars or node wars) between the parties.[15]
- As the result of open-world PvP, utilizing the flagging and corruption system.[15]
تاحاسلا
تاحاسلا are instanced pvP scenarios and are not part of open world PvP.[163][164]
The arena system as we've spoken about before is going to have ladder systems where people can progress within certain seasons based on their win/loss ratios. The importance of arenas are obviously that players have an opportunity to participate [and] practice out certain builds from a PvP perspective and can compete with one another within the system.[163] – Steven Sharif
- تاحاسلا will have 1 man, 3 man, 5 man and possibly 20 man Free-For-All (Deathmatch) group sizes.[165]
- Arenas will have a minimum level requirement to participate.[167]
- There won't be bifurcated brackets with separate player pools.[167]
- There might be some form of an ELO system that gets flushed on a seasonal basis.[167]
- There will be an arena ladder system.[163][165]
- Mayors of military nodes are chosen from citizens through last man standing (gladiatorial arena style) combat.[170][169]
- The arena system may support cross-server combat.[171]
- Arena style combat is instanced but spectators may be possible through an interface.[172]
Player flagging
The open world pvP flagging system is designed to deter people from griefing other players without limiting opportunities for open conflict.[173][174][175][176]
- We do incentivize players to fight back, or to participate in PvP through the flagging system, but not to PK. Not to go corrupt.[175] – Steven Sharif
- Players can participate in open world PvP with one another without having to resort to murder.[177]
- Players will gank other players, but the intention is for Ashes of Creation to not be a "gank box".[177]
- The penalties are intended to be severe enough to deter any type of spawn camping.[178]
- Summons follow the same PvP flagging rules as players and share the player's flag status.[179][180]
- رصانعلا are not provided to players until crafting or gathering interactions are complete. Players interrupted before completion will not lose these items or resources.[181]
There are three levels of flagging for world PvP in Ashes of Creation.[182]
- Non-combatant (green)
- All players start as non-combatants.[183]
- Non-forced attacks, including AoE and status effects, will not hit non-combatant players.[184][185]
- Green players killed by mobs (the mob deals the killing blow) do not flag attacking players as corrupt, but since the exact health of another player is not known (outside of the same party, raid, alliance, or guild), attackers run the risk of killing the player and becoming corrupt.[57]
- Player abilities with CC effects do not apply to non-combatants. The target of a CC ability must be flagged in order to suffer the CC effects. This prevents players from opening attacks that stun non-combatant players during a pull for example.[186]
- Non-combatants will not be flagged for looting bodies.[187]
- Players will be able to opt-in (via a checkbox) to allow their beneficial spells, or non-beneficial AoEs to hit combatants.[188][189]
- If you have that check-box for flagging with your AOEs and heals available then you will flag. If you do not have that box checked then on completion of the skill it will not flag you because the check was made at the start that there was a flagged party member; and then he will not he or she will not receive the beneficial effect as a result or the damage, if it's an offensive spell.[189] – Steven Sharif
- Combatant (purple)
- Players are flagged as combatants if they attack another (non-corrupted) player when carrying out a forced attack. If the attacked player fights back, they are also flagged as combatants, otherwise the attacked player will remain flagged as a non-combatant.[188][190][183]
- This also applies to attacks made by combat pets, summons, or any other player-controlled entities.[179][191]
- Non-combatants entering an open world battleground (PvP event) are automatically flagged as combatants and remain flagged for a period of time after leaving that battleground.[182]
- Non-combatants who heal, buff, or otherwise interact with combatants or corrupted players will be flagged as combatants.[192][193][194][195]
- Players can kill combatants without repercussions, and are encouraged to do so, since dying while a combatant has reduced death penalties.[183]
- Players are not able to manually set their flagging status to combatant.[190]
- Players remain flagged for a period of 90 seconds following their most recent attack on a non-combatant or another combatant.[196]
- Players cannot log out while flagged as combatants.[197]
- Players are flagged as combatants if they attack another (non-corrupted) player when carrying out a forced attack. If the attacked player fights back, they are also flagged as combatants, otherwise the attacked player will remain flagged as a non-combatant.[188][190][183]
- You're not going to see griefing in the game very often; and that's because our flagging system. The corruption mechanics are based around disincentivizing a griefer or PKer but still offering the opportunity, should the occasion arise, where the benefits outweigh the risk, you have the ability to do so. If you gain corruption, which is killing a non-combatant - a player who is not fighting back basically - if you gain that corruption, your world has changed. It is not going to be a very beneficial place to be and you have the potential of losing your gear. Your combat efficacy decreases based on the amount of corruption you accrue. It is a comfortable balance between player agency and grief and basically removing player agency for other players.[198] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupted (red)
- If a combatant player, or their summon, kills a non-combatant player, including any of their controlled entities, such as their battle pet, mount, or summon, the player's character will be flagged as corrupted.[199][179][176]
- Corruption gained for killing controlled entities is a lower value than killing the players.[199]
- A character's PK value increases with each non-combatant player killed over the lifetime of that character.[8][186][200][201][182]
- The wider the level disparity between the players, and the higher the attacker's PK value, the more corruption score they gain.[8][186][200][201][182]
- A character's corruption score multiplies their death penalties and reveals a their location to bounty hunters.[176]
- If a non-combatant attacks a corrupt player, the non-combatant will not flag as a combatant.[183]
- Corrupted players may kill bounty hunters without acquiring additional corruption score.[202]
- There is a 60 second timer to logout while corrupt. Force-disconnecting the client during the cooldown will leave the character in-game.[192][197]
- If a combatant player, or their summon, kills a non-combatant player, including any of their controlled entities, such as their battle pet, mount, or summon, the player's character will be flagged as corrupted.[199][179][176]
- It's important to note that the idea is going to be that, unless a player is in your party, alliance, guild, or raid that you will not have definitive knowledge of their exact hit point values. So when you do something that's sketchy like that, where you want to bring them close to death and let a monster finish him off, you are taking the risk of overhitting and actually gaining the corruption.[57] – Steven Sharif
- Objective-based PvP events do not use the flagging system.[8][203]
تاءامتنالا
An affiliation tree determines how entities are flagged against other entities within its hierarchy.[205][206][207]
- Corrupted players can be attacked (or killed) regardless of other affiliations. This is something that will be tested during Alpha-2.[205]
- Node citizenship.[205][206][207]
- Alliances.[205][206][207]
- تاباقنلا.[205][206][207]
- Parties.[205][206][207]
- تاراغلا.[205][206][207]
- Family.[206]
- Religion.[207]
- Society.[207]
There's node citizenship. There's guild. There's alliance. There's party. There's raid. There's family. All of these types of affiliations have a hierarchy. The highest of which is your node affiliation: So your citizenship is your greatest superceding relationship, which means if you were a part of a guild and the guild has multiple nodes in which its members are citizens of, if there was a war between two of those nodes, the members of those nodes would be first and foremost citizens who defend that node, even against their own guild members.[206] – Steven Sharif
All of these things have some hierarchy; and within that hierarchy there's the ability to participate within certain systems. So for example, if you have a node that has fallen under your vassal state and you're a citizen of the parent node, then you could participate in a siege against the vassal node but if you're a citizen of the vassal node you could not participate as an attacker against the parent node; so there's a hierarchy, unless you were to renounce your citizenship.[207] – Steven Sharif
Player corruption
If a combatant (purple) character, or their summon, kills a non-combatant (green) character, or any of their controlled entities, in Open-world PvP, they will be flagged as corrupted (red).[199][179][176] Corruption gained for killing controlled entities is a lower value than killing players.[199] Player corruption has been referred to as a status condition.[205]
- There is no incentive to go corrupt... There's zero incentive for a player to go red. It actually gives you negatives for doing that- very significant downsides.[175] – Steven Sharif
- The goal of the corruption system is to keep risk alive while significantly curtailing or deterring the ability for players to grief other players.[8][20]
- It is my expectation that the system will perform very well in keeping risk alive, but significantly curtailing or deterring the ability for players to grief.[20] – Steven Sharif
- A player's corruption score (corruption value) increases with each non-combatant player killed.[8][200][201][182] Corruption score has a scaling impact on the efficacy of a character's skills in pvP combat.[192][210] The higher the corruption score:
- The more skill and stat dampening applies until the corrupt player ultimately becomes ineffective at combat.[192][8][186][209][211][212] This dampening only affects pvP combat.[213]
- The more corruption you gain, the less effective you become in PvP and there's going to be a certain period at which point you have gained enough corruption that you're going to be gearless and you're also going to have a massive reduction in your PvP efficacy.[211] – Steven Sharif
- The higher chance of dropping of carried raw materials and gear (هحلسالا and عرد) when the corrupted player dies.[8][201][209][214][211]
- If you go on a murder spree and you have 10 pks under your belt then you might start feeling a significant dampening to your skill effects against other players. I don't want to give necessarily a number or curve for players to extrapolate prior to us having the ability to actually test these ideas and where those numbers are going to lie; but I would say what is the intent behind that dampening: The intent isn't to limit the fun of the player, the intent is to provide a give-and-take or a risk-versus-reward; and the risk of continuing down the road of accruing corruption is not only the loss of your gear and amplified death effects but also your ability to perform in that activity.[215] – Steven Sharif
- Corruption penalties occur as the corruption is gained.[216]
- Reward without risk is meaningless... Corruption is just another word for risk.[217] – Steven Sharif
- The wider the level disparity between the players, and the higher the attacker's PK value, the more corruption they gain.[8][186][200][201][182]
- Corruption value from PK'ing a non-combatant is based on level disparity along with the PKer's cumulative PK value.[200] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupt players suffer death penalties at four times the rate of a non-combatant.[8][201]
- Death penalties for corrupt players apply in every location, including naval PvP zones.[158]
- You can't necessarily time perfectly the damage or understand even the health of the player. Unless you were in their party you cannot see an opponent's health as well, so that's another component that adds risk..[55] – Steven Sharif
- Corrupted players remain corrupted when they enter naval PvP zones.[158][159][160]
- Corrupted players can be attacked regardless of other affiliations. This is something that will be tested during Alpha-2.[205]
- Corrupted players may kill bounty hunters without acquiring additional corruption score.[219][202]
- Corrupted player's combat penalties do not apply when battling bounty hunters.[219]
- Player to player trading, interacting with vendors or NPCs, and the ability to access storage is disabled for corrupted players.[220][8][221]
- Previously it was stated that corrupted players could not store items in public warehouses but could utilize private storage within their freehold.[8][221]
- Corrupted players will still be able to enter and leave their freehold buildings but may not deposit or withdraw items from storage.[220]
- There is a 60 second timer to logout while corrupt. Force-disconnecting the client during the cooldown will leave the character in-game.[192][197]
- Q: Will there be any large-scale consequences when many players in a group guild region religion etc become corrupted frequently or for an extended period of time?
- A: There are not group dynamics or mechanics that revolve around mass murdering people in the world. The corruption system is intended to deter mass murdering, not to provide incentives by which players can go out and gain corruption.[222] – Steven Sharif
- Q: If my guild has no one corrupted and your guild is like always killing people and always corrupted, will your guild have repercussions because they're corrupted versus my guild?
- A: No I don't think so either. And the reason why is we want to deter it, but we don't want to make the system meaningless; and if the deterrent becomes too heavy-handed then it's a system without a purpose. And I think that the intent behind the corruption is that like during a rise in passion and like anger and whatever you want to make this decision and do something and you'll suffer the repercussions later. But if those repercussions are just overwhelmingly bad and even anti-social in the sense that like your guild is like hey man you went corrupted and this gives us like corruption points on the guild, and like you're out of here, then people just aren't going to choose to use it; and then at which point might as well just take it out. So I think there's a healthy balance between the type of deterrent used.[223] – Steven Sharif
- Players do not lose gold upon death, no matter their corruption level.[224]
- Player corruption is different to the corruption found in corrupted areas.[225][226]
- Corruption has a visible effect on a player’s appearance.[227]
Removing corruption
The primary means to remove corruption is through death. Multiple deaths may be necessary to remove all corruption.[229][183]
- Dying removes a significant portion of a player's corruption score.[230]
- Gaining experience will also slowly reduce a player's corruption score.[231][186][229]
- Any experience that's gained by the player, whether it be through achievements in crafting, or in adventuring, or through other types of achievements: All of that experience goes towards your adventuring class experience gained; and then some experience can dual purpose towards professions as well. So if I reach an achievement in my crafting profession and that grants me additional experience within that profession to rank up, it will also grant the same amount of experience over in my adventuring level; and to that point, anytime you gain adventuring experience you tick away at the corruption.[231] – Steven Sharif
- A quest may be utilized to reduce the player kill (PK) count of a corrupt player in order for them to accumulate less corruption score in the future.[232][230]
- Corruption duration is reduced in military nodes.[234]
Player death
When a player dies they disintegrate into ash. The ashes contain any items lost by the player due to applicable death penalties.[236][237][238][212][239]
- Player flagging is not triggered by looting.[187]
- It might even be the case that their particular bag space doesn't have available location for a three-by-one log; and you're a lumberjack and they see you just chopping down these trees and you're like, there's no point in me engaging with this person, because I have nothing to gain due to my capacity.[242] – Steven Sharif
- There will be a period of time following a player's death before their mule despawns. Other players must kill that player's mule to be able to loot it.[243]
- If the mule dies its corpse will contain the same percentage of lootable items according to the player's death penalties.[243][244]
- Players do not lose gold upon death, no matter their corruption level.[224]
- Glint looted from a dead character by any other player, regardless of affiliation, becomes stolen glint. Character's who loot their own bodies will recover their glint in its non-stolen state.[245][120][237]
Safe zones
كاشكألا بعال
Players are not able to be attacked or robbed while occupying a player stall.[249]
Player stalls may not be renewed during a siege declaration.[249]
Player housing
A permissions system will enable an owner/primary tenant to grant access to specific parts of their housing.[250][251][252][253]
- Ability to open the door and enter the home.[254][252][253]
- Access to crops.[255][252]
- Ability to deposit or withdraw items from storage containers.[256][254][252][257][258]
- Permission to use furniture or crafting stations.[254]
A property has a single owner/primary tenant.[250][259][251]
- Marriage enables family size to increase by one so that housing access can be shared.[259][260]
- Access lists can be used to mimic co-ownership.[253]
- Payment of taxes may be via a "gentleman's agreement".[261]
- It'll be a single owner based system for those types of properties- for properties in general, but it doesn't prevent players obviously from collaborating and pooling resources in order to achieve certain achievements in the game.[251] – Steven Sharif
ةرحلا
Freehold owners are able to set permissions that grant access to their artisan and business buildings' services.[262][263][264][80][265]
- Freehold ownership is designated by one account only and then the family system is the system that facilitates multiple accounts having permission basis within that freehold.[259] – Steven Sharif
- Freehold permissions are intended to work with the family and guild systems.[262][263][264]
- It is still not determined if freehold permissions will be able to be granted to individuals outside those social structures.[263]
- Freehold permissions may only apply to battalions/micro-structures within a guild.[266]
- Interaction with the guild system will be tested in Alpha-2.[267]
- This includes permission to enter the homestead, interact with furniture, access storage, interact with crafting or processing stations, and harvest resources.[262]
- Permissions to help manage your home are handled through affiliations like your Guild and family system. When setting permissions for your Freehold to do things like enter the house, interact with furniture, access Freehold storage, interact with crafting and processing stations, and harvesting gatherables on a Freehold, you can set if your Guild or family members should be able to do these things.[262]
- Permission to decorate a freehold is restricted to the owner of the freehold.[254] Previously it was stated that permission to decorate but not take anything from the house would be able to be assigned to other players.[252]
- Family members may be granted permission to apply their cosmetic skins to freehold buildings.[268]
Players cannot steal from a freehold under normal circumstances.[262][269][255][270]
- Items stored in a freehold become lootable after a successful siege against their parent node.[271][262][270] It has not been decided which players get to loot the debris field during this period.[271]
- Only players given permission to do so will be able to do things like access your Freehold storage, and harvest crops and animals on your Freehold. These permissions are capable of being individually assigned per interaction. Note that if the node associated with your Freehold is successfully destroyed during a siege event, attackers will be able to assault Freeholds, and have a chance to pillage them for their resources.[262]
Players cannot pvP while inside the footprint of a freehold homestead even if the doors are unlocked.[262][272] This does not apply for a period of two hours following a successful siege against its parent node.[273][274][143][275]
- Your home building is safe from PvP. While on the footprint of your home, you can not be harmed by damage from other players.[262]
- NPC guards may be available for hire to defend freeholds after a successful node siege.[275] NPC guards that permanently exist on a freehold are not a planned feature.[276]
- Duels may be initiated within a freehold or node as they are considered self-contained events that are opt-in by all parties, and do not fall under the player flagging system.[277]
PvP seasons
Performance in various pvP systems (such as لفاوقلا, تاحاسلا, بورحلا ةباقن) is measured over the course of 6 month PvP seasons. At the end of each season, a player's cumulative score may unlock various rewards.[163][278]
- Gear enhancement rewards.[278]
- Achievement ranks.[278]
- Purchasing power (Currency).[278]
- Potentially more granular player health bars.[56]
Gear enhancement rewards
Gear enhancements are possible both during and after an item is crafted.[279][280]
- There is a combination of systems that take an item to its max potential. Players will need to contribute in a certain number of these systems to reach max. Some of the systems are an either/or situation.[279] – Kory Rice
- Crafting recipes can be enhanced by adding higher rarity or different crafting materials into their selectable crafting slots at crafting stations.[280][281][282][283]
- Enchantment scrolls and tempering allow gear to be enhanced post-crafting.[280][284]
- The bulk of a weapon's power comes from its crafting recipe and the materials used in its construction.[285]
- The contribution of materials to crafting an item results in advancing the rarity of that item. Now, that doesn't exclude players who don't have the legendary or the higher quality contributed resources from progressing their common item up the rarity tree through enchantments such as scroll enchanting or through tempering the gear. Both of those can affect the quality and the rarity of the gear that you produce, but by contributing the resources during the crafting process you are getting a head start with the higher quality item and now are less dependent on those other avenues to achieve that, which might be again a different vertical space of progression that you don't have as good of access to.[280] – Steven Sharif
- Runes/Power stones are a potential methods for enhancing weapons.[286][287]
- Enchantment stones are potential rewards for performance over six month PvP seasons. These grant temporary pvP-focused benefits to gear (via a socketing system).[278][288]
Metrics
Ashes of Creation gathers tracking data to facilitate achievements, titles and other accolades on a server.[289]
- Number of successful siege defenses.[289]
- Number of successful siege assaults.[289]
- Number of pvP kills.[290][289]
- Number of pvP deaths.[290]
- Raid participation points.[289]
- Number of firsts.[289]
Visibility of those types of things on the server help to promote a competitive atmosphere. If there is an attainable impression that you can work towards, so that others know your success, you have more drive to succeed.[289] – Steven Sharif
Leader boards
Players will be able to opt-in to track certain achievements on leaderboards, such as.[291]
- تانازنزلا completed.[291][292]
- تاراغلا completed.[291][292]
- pvP kills.[291]
- لفاوقلا raided.[291]
- عمج activity.[291]
Leaderboards may be seasonal.[292]
- We have many dreams that we want to do with game-to-web and game-to-mobile in regards to showing stats and being making things shareable for you. We know how social media works; how sharing content with friends works. But those things will come in due time.[291] – Margaret Krohn
Arena ladder
The arena ladder system records a player's progress within PvP seasons based on their arena win/loss ratios.[163][165]
- Titles can be received from arena play.[169]
- Other rewards will be revealed at a later time.[168]
- Arena points that can be used to buy gear is not currently in the design.[169]
Guild ladder
An inter-guild ladder will rank guilds based on their performance within competitive activities:[295][296]
When the guild participates in guild wars or they participate in sieges, you'll be able to climb the ranks of your inter-guild ladder as well so you get bragging rights amongst your friends.[296] – Steven Sharif
Trophy park
Trophy park is an area within Town, City or Metropolis nodes that has available spots for trophies. These trophies show the character names of players who are the first to complete world bosses and dungeon bosses that were spawned as the result of the development of that particular node.[297]
- Server announcements and achievements are designed to encourage groups to experience new content.[297]
Duels
Duels may be initiated within a freehold or node.[277][298]
- Dueling is a self-contained event that requires opt-in by all parties.[277]
- There will be a way to auto-decline duel requests.[298]
- Dueling is not considered a part of the flagging system.[277]
Duels won't be considered a part of the flagging system. The duels are going to be a self-contained event that gets opted into by the inviter and the participants.[277] – Steven Sharif
Time to kill
Time to kill (TTK) in Ashes of Creation will be a little bit faster than most MMOs.[56]
- Previously it was stated that the TTK was expected to be around 30 seconds to a minute.[299]
- The developers do not want one-shots in the final MMORPG.[300]
- Average non-elite mob time-to-kill for a solo player is intended to be around 6 seconds.[301]
- In the MMORPG we really don't want to see any one-shots. The time-to-kill needs to be strategic and tactical.[300] – Steven Sharif
Hitboxes
The developers are testing different approaches to accommodate varying hitboxes between the races.[302]
- There may be a single unified hitbox with some exceptions or some special collision rules as opposed to having different sized hitboxes.[302]
More than likely we'll have some sort of unified or unified-ish hitbox. But again it's going to probably have a unified hitbox with some exceptions or some special sort of collision rules based on them as opposed to just making it smaller for one and not the other.[302] – Jeffrey Bard
There aren't separate types of hitbox categories in the Ashes of Creation MMORPG as there were in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse.[302]
We don't have separate types of hitbox categories, for example. There's no head hit box in the MMORPG like there was in APOC. So from a critical standpoint you're not going to see a greater risk of critting for a larger hitbox.[302] – Steven Sharif
Headshot mechanics
Headshot mechanics (where there is a specific hitbox for a player's head) are not planned for the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[302][303][304]
- Headshots were a part of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale.[304]
- Previously it was stated that headshot mechanics may be implemented in the MMORPG along the lines of a higher critical chance[305][306] and that they would not be one hit kills.[305]
- Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[307]
- Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[307]
- Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[307]
- A Ranger skill called Headshot was introduced leading up to Alpha-2 testing.[308]
Stat growth
- Stats can be improved based on gear, tattoos, and other enhancements, such as socketed items.[309]
- Players will have significant agency over the allocation of their stat progression.[309]
- Gear has approximately a 40-50% influence on a players overall power in the game.[310]
- Artisan profession does not affect a player's stats.[311]
- Previously it was stated that race "seeds" a player's base stats, then the primary archetype grows the base stats.[312][313][314] Any contribution by the secondary archetype was later removed.[312]
Equalized PvP
There will not be equalized pvP in the open world. There may be equalized PvP in certain arena battlegrounds under specific circumstances.[315]
يدئاص
Players can acquire the bounty hunter title through a quest available to citizens of Military Stage 4 (Town) nodes and potentially their vassals or affiliated nodes.[316][182]
- Bounty hunters can activate their Pathfinding ability to reveal corrupted player locations on their map.[317][318]
- This will flag the bounty hunter for combat only to corrupted players for a period of one hour from the time of activation.[317]
- The pathfinding ability can be toggled on or off.[317][319]
- It is possible that bounty hunters will be permanently flagged versus corrupted players with the pathfinding ability toggled off. This design change will be decided based on testing.[320]
- The accuracy of bounty hunter maps is determined by a player's progression in the bounty hunter system.[321]
- Corrupted players may kill bounty hunters without acquiring additional corruption score.[219][202]
- Corrupted player's combat penalties do not apply when battling bounty hunters.[219]
- Chief bounty hunter is a node government title that grants special access to NPCs in a node.[322]
- Credit for killing a corrupted player goes to the bounty hunter who lands the last hit (killing blow). This may be changed to damage contribution in future.[323]
Bounty hunter maps
Corrupted players with a high enough corruption score will be visible on the world and mini maps. These players will have markers posted on the map by an NPC from a Military node of at least stage 4 (Town), and will only be granted to players who have the Bounty hunter title.[317][324] The accuracy of bounty hunter maps is determined by a player's progression in the bounty hunter system.[321]
Taverns are one of the locations that bounties will be posted. As players gain corruption, taverns may offer bounties to eliminate those players; or have a specific area cleared of problem players, thus giving a POI (point of interest) on the world map.[325]

Corrupted players potentially gain rewards for killing bounty hunters.[327]
PvP/PvE gear
Ashes of Creation is a PvX game. Players will naturally encounter both pvP and PvE elements.[329][215][177][330] It is unlikely that a player could purely focus on just pvP or just PvE.[215][328][177][330]
- Ashes is a PvX game; and so in that regard, your ability to wholesale disconnect from the PvP elements of the game are likely not going to be entirely successful. Now, does that mean that you can reduce your exposure to PvP? A hundred percent; and there are multiple play paths and progression points that players can elect instead to be more PvE focused, but by the sheer nature of risk-versus-reward, and risk including not being able to predict how other players might impact your gameplay, that is an element of the innate risk that exists in the multiplayer environment of a PvX setting. So, not everybody is going to like that and we accept that; and we're not trying to build a game that everybody is going to like, because everybody it's doing that is not going to be successful, because there're just people with different interests; and you know we accept that and we're very on the nose about what we're trying to achieve. The idea is not to create a gank fest, is not to create a grief fest. That is not what PvX is; and so because of that we have certain mechanisms and systems that govern the way players engage in PvP and the majority of those are opt-in, but there is always that element of risk that's governed by the flagging system. And so, if you're interested in that I would take a look at the Wiki and look up what flagging is, and look up what corruption is. My experience tells me- and my expectations of the system are that they will signal significantly reduce a player's exposure to non-consensual PvP, but that risk is always going to be present to some degree.[329] – Steven Sharif
- A defining principle of Ashes of Creation as a PvX game is that PvE builds the world, and pvP changes the world.[331]
- Around 80% of the content is open-world, where healthy competition is an instigator for player friction; for potential cooperation; for the ability to yield alliances; and the political theater that comes with it. This is an intended part of the PvX game design.[332][333][174][334][335]
- There won't be separate PvE and PvP servers but some servers may be more PvP focused than others.[329][177][336]
- We're very clear with our objective and philosophy on the game and we understand that they may not appeal to everybody. But it is an important reciprocal relationship between the content that's related to PvE and the content that's related to PvP and they feed off of each other. They're catalysts for change: Their progression, their development. It's things that people can value when they see something earned and they see something lost. That elicits an emotional response from the player: That they've invested time in to either succeed or fail; and PvP allows for that element to be introduced into gameplay. And we're very clear that is our objective: That risk versus reward relationship, that achievement-based mentality. Not everybody's going to be a winner and that's okay.[335] – Steven Sharif
